Biodiversity Needs All of Us
Hundreds of pictures will compose a photo mosaic depicting biodiversity.
Brussels, 22 May 2010 (IUCN) - Today we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. This special occasion reminds us of the urgency to take action to conserve biodiversity – our life source.
Biodiversity concerns everybody. The actions of every single individual are essential to guarantee that the human impact on biodiversity is reduced and that the survival of future generations is ensured.
IUCN’s initiative Countdown 2010 has launched an ambitious project: collecting hundreds of biodiversity cards to create a large photo mosaic. The mosaic will be displayed on Countdown 2010 website and at major events worldwide such as the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in October in Japan where world leaders will define the future of global biodiversity policy and a new biodiversity target.
Everybody is invited to submit their card with a photo portrait and a message for biodiversity. Each card will be added to the biodiversity photo mosaic. The application can be accessed here: www.countdown2010.net/year-biodiversity/what-can-you-do/biodiversity-needs-all-of-us.
Dr Hans Friederich, IUCN Regional Director for Pan-Europe, has submitted the first card. His message is: “The continued loss of biodiversity puts our life and that of next generations in serious threat. Conserving biodiversity means securing our future”. See the card: www.countdown2010.net/year-biodiversity/what-can-you-do/biodiversity-needs-all-of-us.
The Countdown 2010 team will collect cards at some major events, as well as on the Countdown 2010 website. From 1 to 4 June, European Commission’s Green Week participants will submit their own biodiversity message at the IUCN stand.
