Ralph Hopkins - ILCP Win Helmsley Grant

 

The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust awarded a grant to the International League of Conservation Photographers and to ILCP Associate Ralph Lee Hopkins for his conservation photography projects in the Baja Peninsula and Galapagos. Through this grant, which is part of $136 million dollars that the Trust is awarding in grants to charitable organizations across the United States and elsewhere for a variety of environmental and humanitarian causes, Hopkins and ILCP will initiate a three-year long and first of its kind conservation photography project focusing on the Baja Peninsula in Mexico and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. The ILCP will assist Hopkins with managing the grant, coordinating field expeditions, and launching outreach and educational campaigns targeted to audiences in the United States and in the areas in which the projects are located. The first project, “Baja California: Hope for an Alternative Future”, will involve working with conservation organizations and scientists in the region to protect critical habitat, wildlife, and cultural values from wide-spread development and large-scale land ownership transfers that threaten Baja’s future.

The second project, “Galapagos: Islands at Risk”, will involve working with conservation organizations and scientists concerned with major issues threatening the social and environmental health of the Galapagos Islands. ILCP will assist Hopkins with managing the grant, coordinating field expeditions, and launching outreach and educational campaigns targeted to audiences in the United States and in the areas in which the projects are located.

Ralph Lee Hopkins is a Santa Fe, New Mexico-based photographer who travels to the world’s wild places with Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. He is founder and director of Photography Expeditions for the Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic alliance.
