John Fawcett

White Man's Bonnet

Artist Statement

john_fawcett.jpg An uncommonly talented painter working in watercolor and oil, John Fawcett has spent his life studying and gaining inspiration from his subjects. His first-had knowledge of horses and dogs is evident in his detailed images, which often focus on the relationships between animals and people.

"I want to make the viewer smell the horse, hear the hoof beats and have all their senses be taken by the painting."

A practicing veterinarian for over 20 years, Fawcett sold his practice in 1996 in order to fully devote himself to painting. His success since that transition has been nothing short of phenomenal. Fawcett has been invited to show his work at the Autry Museum's Masters of the American West show where he won the 2006 watercolor award. Other invitations include the Cheyenne Frontier Days Art Show. Fawcett's work was selected for the Top 100 Arts for the Parks exhibit in 1996, 1997, and 1999.

He won the Artists' Choice award at the Buffalo Bill show in 1996, the US Art Award of Merit at the 1997 Arts for the Parks exhibit, and was inducted as an honorary lifetime artist member to the Mountain Oyster Club in Tucson, Arizona in 1997.

His paintings, "On Line" (2002) and "The Loop" (2004) were selected for the official Cheyenne Frontier Days posters. His painting, "The New Recruit" was purchased by the Museum in 2006. He was inducted as a full lifetime member of the American Academy of Equine Art in 2002.

He has taught workshops on painting horses for the AAEA, Scottsdale Artists' School and Fredericksburg Artists School.

Fawcett has been featured in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Western Horseman, The Equine Image, InformArt, and US Art Magazines.

In addition to a steady stream of commissions, he was commissioned by MacMillan McGraw-Hill to illustrate a condensed version of "My Friend Flicka" and also by Coors, the National Cutting Horse Association, Equus Magazine, Soda Creek Clothing, and Schaefer Outfitters for work in promotions. His work can be seen in galleries in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.
